Common Clover error codes and how to fix them

Your Clover device will return 3 types of messages; you can tell what type of message it is by the first digit.

    • If your Clover error code starts with a “2”, it is considered a successful message.
    • If the first digit of your Clover POS error is a “4”, it is considered an unsuccessful message.
    • If the first digit of your Clover error message starts with a “5”, the device did not provide a status.

After that, the next two digits in your Clover error alert will tell you the specifics of the status. Let’s walk through some of the most common ones so you can better understand Clover POS system errors.

    Clover Error Code 200

All clear. The action was processed successfully by the device. This is not an error and usually means the request completed as expected.

    Clover Error Code 209

The request was successful, but the operation was canceled by user action. This often happens during a manual entry or when a transaction is stopped mid-process. If this appears frequently or without user input, it may indicate a larger issue.

    Clover Error Code 400

Invalid request. The request could not be processed and will continue to fail if repeated. It’s not recommended to retry without addressing the underlying issue.

    Clover Error Code 401

Invalid token. Authentication failed. The device could not verify its credentials. This often requires updating or refreshing the device’s authorization before retrying.

    Clover Error Code 402

Request failed. This usually relates to an account or subscription issue that needs to be resolved before the transaction can proceed.

    Clover Error Code 403

Forbidden. Access denied. The device or account does not have permission to perform this action. Retrying without correcting the account or subscription setup will not resolve the issue.

    Clover Error Code 404

Not found. Connection issue. The device was unable to reach the processor or requested service. Retrying later may resolve the issue.

    Clover Error Code 409

Request conflict. The request conflicted with another action already in progress. Repeating the request is not recommended.

    Clover Error Code 415

Invalid data format. The request contains information the system can’t process. The data must be corrected before retrying.

    Clover Error Code 429

Too many requests. The device has sent too many requests in a short period of time. Retrying immediately may continue to fail.

    Clover Error Code 500

Unknown system error. The request failed, and the result is unclear. Retrying without troubleshooting may cause additional issues.

    Clover Error Code 501

Service unavailable. The device or service cannot respond to this request. Retrying immediately is not recommended.

    Clover Error Code 502

Bad gateway. Communication error. There was a problem between connected systems. Retrying later may resolve the issue.

    Clover Error Code 503

System busy. The device is currently handling another request and cannot respond. Retrying later may resolve the issue.

    Clover Error Code 504

Request timed out. The device did not respond in time. Retrying later may resolve the issue.
